I prefer diving into compelling fiction that make me flip pages at an alarming rate, while wishing the book would never end. So, reading books like Miles Morales: Spider-Man by Jason Reynolds during my lunch break is proving to be a frustrating experience because every time I have to put the book down I mentally draft a resignation letter just so I can finish my damn book. So after a few deep breaths and some calming tea, I have come up with books that will let me stop with ease and yet welcome me back with open flaps the next day: Curry: Reading, Eating, and Race by Naben Ruthnum This is a short collection of essays that explore how a dish that doesn’t technically exist can both bind and ostracize various peoples and cultures. Of course, it is far more complex than that, so despite its length Curry is the perfect lunch read. Ruthnum’s writing demands some time away from the page, it asks you to unpack what you’ve just read and re-examine your own ideas on food and people. The essays are sure to be kicking around in your brain long after you’ve put Curry downâ€"which is precisely what makes it easy to dive back in the next day. Dead Light March by Daniel José Older This novella is the latest in the Shadowshaper Cypher series by Older. It is set between the first book Shadowshaper and the sequel novella Ghost Girl in the Corner and before the upcoming Shadowhouse Fall novel. Except, in my opinion, it could also serve as a good introduction to the series. In my case, it served as a reminder of all the reasons I love Older’s work. I don’t know if everyone puts off reading their comic hauls for months at a time, but personally I don’t want to power through everything so fast that the wait for the next comic festival feels unbearably long. And yet, I also don’t want the excitement of new comics to fade away. So, every once in a while, I take a break from non-fiction like Curry and pick something from my TCAF haul to delight in. Cucumber Quest (Volume 1) is a stand-out favourite for me this year. It offers a fresh (yes, ‘tis a pun) and adorable take on the Chosen One trope, while joyfully muddling gender stereotypes in fantasy. You could finish it all in one go, or pace yourself and read a chapter per lunch break. It’ll always welcome you back and wave you goodbye, depending on what your schedule demands. The Second Mango by Shira Glassman I read this a while ago, but I remember taking a lot of breaks between reading this, the first book in the Mangoverse series. The Second Mango is a sweet romance/adventure with lots of moments to swoon over and food mentions to drool over. I can see this being the perfect thing to read while digging into some comfort food in the middle of a stressful day at work. In fact, I think I’ll make the next book, Climbing the Date Palm, my new lunch break read. So far, it seems that this is the range of what I can handle during my breaks: short non-fiction, novellas that aren’t too intense, and fun adventures/romances. Through different types of research, we are finding out that our prison systems are no longer effective and there is a serious need for improvement. This book clearly shows his views on communism and events that took place in history. Orwell uses political propaganda the most in his novel. As previously stated, the entire book represents his political views on historic events. For example, Comrade Napoleon, once in power, slowly makes them work harder and stray away from that perfect paradise that they were promised once rebelling from Jones. This reflects the betrayal employed by the Russian government. Another example is when the animals on the farm work harder, but the windmill is destroyed several times. Each time this happens, the animals are told to work harder to repair it. These were the same techniques used by the Russian government. Also, the class distinction that is created on the farm is an example of political propaganda. Towards the end of the novel, the pigs, dogs, and Napoleon get much more food and other privileges than the rest of the animals. This class distinction comes to exist contrary to their original reform ideas. All three of these previous examples are examples of political propaganda. They are political comments that are implied by Orwell. By using this story, Orwell successfully transmits his political views to the reader. In Animal Farm, Orwell mostly employs the element of patriotism. Being an Englishman, Orwell is criticizing the communist regime in Russia. Also, since it was published in a time of war, World War 2, his work is most definitely going to have an impact on peoples patriotism. As far as the novel is concerned, Orwell also uses patriotism among the animals. There are numerous examples of this in the book. Comrade Napoleon employs these methods of propaganda, just to remain popular and in power. For example, the saying Four legs good, two legs bad! that is said many times over the course of the book, is pure propaganda. It is not surprising that Comrade Napoleon made this saying so popular. This saying, is the plain folks technique to propaganda. Using that saying, Comrade Napoleon is relating to the rest of the animals. As far as they can tell, Napoleon has four legs, so he must be a friend, which is also written in their Commandments. This is all to gain popularity among the animals, which is a device popularly used among politics in real life. Another example is the use of transfer in the novel. It is no coincidence that all the animals listen to the pigs. This is because they are smarter than the rest of the animals. Because the pigs hold prestige over the other animals, the other animals are almost forced to follow them. Also, whenever something bad happens in the book, Squealer is sent to deliver a speech to the animals. Why is it that he ends every speech about a bad incident with Surely, comrades, you do not want Jones back? That line is propaganda at its ugliest. Finishing a speech with a line like that will leave people speechless, which is exactly why it is said. No animal on the farm would dare question that. No matter what bad event happens on the farm, whether its Napoleons fault or not, if Squealer says that line, nobody will question in it. Recently, on FOX News, there was a poll that showed a very high Bush-approval-rating throughout the country. This is propaganda with fear. I felt that since Bush had a very high approval rating, that I should support him fully. To a certain extent, this is a lot like what happened in the novel. At a time of, what seemed to be, war between the farms, the animals felt that they needed a leader. Napoleon was surprisingly elected the leader of the farm, with no other candidates running against him. Both in the novel, and in my experience, fear was a factor. Fear of being with the minority or fear from really taking action against somebody. These two circumstances parallel each other. Another element of propaganda I have been exposed to is patriotism. During this time of war, there are many pro-war and anti-war protests, especially in New York. Groups from both sides of the issue create slogans and ideas that question ones patriotism. Pro-war protestors would protest with symbols such as flags, or military uniforms. Anti-war protestors would protest with big signs or posters expressing their views. Each use propaganda to question ones patriotism at a time of war, just to try to persuade someone to support their side. In Animal Farm, the animals come up with numerous sayings, such as Long live Comrade Napoleon! and Napoleon is always right, to support Comrade Napoleon and show their patriotism to his leadership. My experience and these actions taken by the animals in the novel are similar because they show how the use of slogans as symbols can be used as propaganda for patriotism. Thirdly, an element that also relates to my other experiences, is wartime propaganda. Shortly before and during the war with Iraq, almost every speech that President Bush makes includes the words weapons of mass destruction. Simply, it means bombs, but to call it that term, is propaganda. Technically that is a glittering generality. It is a term that means something, but is called differently to enforce the idea of the speaker. In Animal Farm, whenever an animal refers to Jones, it means slavery. The term Jones and the term weapons of mass destruction are used repeatedly to enforce the idea of what it really is. Orwells use of propaganda in the novel is to propose his view of communism to others. His overall political commentary is that totalitarian governments are faulty systems. This is evident by seeing the turmoil of the animals during and after Napoleons reign as leader of the farm. Although started out meaning to be good, it turns out to be faulty in the end. Personally, I do agree with Orwells view of totalitarian governments. I, like Orwell, think there are too many faults and nobody really gains anything in the end. This can be seen in many nations such as Cuba, Russia, and China, when they were under totalitarian governments. Orwells plot of how communism basically failed on the farm proves his view against communism and its faults. James Freeman from USA Today claims that in there is no freedom of speech or assembly, no right to a fair trial, no right to vote in a country such as Cuba. On the other side of the story, some people claim that The primary purpose of The Communist Manifesto was to outline the theory of Class Struggle and incite the Proletarian to revolt. Culture Wars in the US and American Politics The term culture wars gained national prominence when first used by Pat Buchanan at the 1992 Republican National Convention and declare that there is currently a war for the nations sole. This became a critic moment within American politics and can be viewed as a tipping point for a major politic shift within the G.O.P. This also garnered the attention of almost all of the main stream media sources and helped create the movement of Christian conservatism in mainstream politics. This idea is essentially a clash between what two different people (or groups) believe to be true within our society, and others with different viewpoints. No other collective set of ethical and moral issues have driven a wedge into the social fabric of the United States quite like the â€Å"culture wars† of the past thirty years. Lines of division have been drawn on social, political, religious, legal and family issues between two warring factions of secular institute and organized fundamentalists. The culture wars take on more than an ethnographical approach in American society. It is about politics, education, communal relations and the anthropology of how this country will be shaped for future generations. The examination of these wars should be dealt with as a category for the purpose of ethnographic inquiry. In other words, applicable scrutiny must be applied to each significant topic as a function of contemporary social process that makes up the foundation, and the catalyst, of this war. Make no mistake that this monolithic movement has caused a deep divide when the American landscape. The battle against secularism is a movement with profound emotional dimensions. Along with the effects of political mobilization and a strategic purpose, the New Christian Right has developed an emotional construction of collective identities that is at the forefront of today’s issues. James Davison Hunter believes that Americans have been divided between the orthodox and the progressives, characterized by political and social hostility rooted in different systems of understanding. Public debate in modern America is not so much a process of mutual understanding and negotiation as the exercise of power politics, but of imposing one agenda to the exclusion of another (Hunter p.155) He also goes on to state the media no longer mediates the political issues, but instead exacerbates the division by polarizing the moderate discourse that is in the average Americans mindset. This level and volume of this exacerbation can be calibrated and amplified with the unlimited reach and unregulated internet. One defining feature of the culture war is the labeling and classification of issues that have been deemed as moralistic. This is a form of binary construction that lends credence to the idea that the struggle is religious in nature. In most cases, issues and players are presented as polar opposites with irreconcilable differences. Henceforth, most of the battles within this culture war are usually portrayed as liberal versus conservative, or to a lesser degree, Democrat versus Republican (Chapman p. xxvii). Although most Americans may find themselves somewhere between the divisiveness or these polarities, the binary construction has a galvanizing effect on individuals who tend to fall toward either end of the socio-political spectrum. This blending of religion and politics is still alive and well today with people like Ralph Reed of the Faith and Freedom Coalition, Jim Daly of Focus on the Family, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum, Tim Wildmon of the American Family Association, James Dobson of the Alliance Defense Fund, David Barton of Wall Builders, Beverly LaHaye of Concerned Women for America. These are fundamental desperate views on how American culture operates. Methodology of Unification Social approaches through the use of communication, especially with electronic mass communication, are certainly nothing new. Below are a few sociological and psychological unification factors that have contributed to the success in the fusion of the New Christian Right. Evolutionary consideration should be made in terms of how this movement has generated support on such a grand scale. Many of the factors have been used successfully utilized by previous social and political movements, but this particular phenomenon has developed to the point of major influence in the current American political climate. In conjunction with the dynamics of emotional appeal, a number of unifying factors come into play in the attraction and recruitment of interested outsiders. These factors can also strengthen the bond of internal group cohesiveness. Some of these factors are illustrated below, but this list is certainly not and end-all, be-all. Psychological approaches differ by the individuals’ world view and level of influence, or distraction, from local persuaders and opinion leaders. In addition to drawing on preexisting emotional bases, within individual experiences, a conscience constituency can be emergent, especially in the case of highly successful social movements (Goodwin p.31). These social approaches are focused on visible behavior or mobilization into action by the identifying the groups’ cognition. Successful social approaches can eventually led to a version of a socially constructed reality. This group (or it can be said, a number of these groups, but as a whole) utilize Automaton perspectives (Bryant p.7) to help influence their agenda-setting prerogative. In order for agenda-setting to occur, individuals must be susceptible to being programmed by the media. In this particle case, the media in specially honed to individuals who have a need for orientation. Specialized interest groups need the recognition and attention of the mass media (and various specialized channels of media) in order to acquire legitimacy, visibility and credibility, as well as communicate their issue frames to the public (Callaghan p. 9). With a number of carefully selected issues and/or stories, many of these media outlets attempt to completely define issues, or at least exemplify the issue. In these cases the exemplifiers attempt to exemplify the issue (and the perspective) as definite and exemplified. Exemplification is not an all-or nothing concept, however (Bryant p. 21). The degree in which the level of exemplification takes place is subject to empirical determination. These methodologies fall into the parameters of a scientific field of study, but have interpretive qualities to the media consumer. Therefore, the levels of interpretation validate the level of effectiveness for not only each media outlet, but also by each strategy utilized. A social cognitive can also lead into the philosophical position of moral relativism which is the difference between moral judgments across many people and cultures. In the case of the New Christian Right, the branch of moral relativism that copepods into meti-ethical relativism does not factor into their subjectivity of culturally moral issues. Meti-ethical moral relativism holds that no one is objectively right or wrong, but behavior should be tolerated even if that behavior goes against an individuals value system. So, this relativism is relative to their particular stand or viewpoint. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy says that, Many moral relativists, however, take the fact-value distinction to be fundamental. There is not manner in which traditionalist can prove that their morals and ethics are particularly right or wrong, but there is still the judgment of their relativism being superior (Westacott). From their perspectives, what is considered the truth is through cognitive relativism that is based on a cultural relativism that has been developed and molded in an all encompassing and unifying perspective. The line that separates church and state has become more blurry within this country. The praxis, by which moralists have coerced, swayed and sometimes enforced their belief system onto the political format has had a resounding affect on our legislative and judicial system. Beliefs are a means to organize behavior and emotion. Therefore, many of these moral activists are seeking a means of ratifying their socially construction perception of reality. Dominion Theology Dominion Theology or Dominionism is the proposal that Christians should strive toward either a nation governed by Christians or one governed by a conservative Christian understanding of biblical law. This ideology is dominant among evangelical Protestants within the United States. It is a type of theocracy and is interconnected the theonomy, though it does not necessarily sponsor Mosaic laws as the basis of government. Some elements within the mainstream Christian Right have been predisposed by Dominion Theology authors. Indeed, some writers have employed the idiom Dominionism more broadly to the New Christian Right, wholly arguing that that faction is founded upon a theology that requires Christians to preside over non-Christians. Of course there are a few people who believe that the actions the police officers took were necessary. Perhaps they might say, ‘ ‘They asked for it,† â€Å"They Resisted arrest,† they had it coming. Y to them that events such as the police killings are a nexus where white racial resentment and white supremacy are made to confront black/ minority pain, reasonable hurt, and the righteous anger. Why is it that the media has always showed the â€Å"gang member† as a Black or Hispanic male? These are subjects we should be asking ourselves and realize how that can be crucial to some ones perception about a group of people and think about the repercussions all this can have to future generations. Just recently released to the public was data that disappointingly proves the Boston Police department has used racially biased policing.Researchers concluded that police targeted Blacks in 63. 3% of encounters, while Blacks make up less than a quarter of Boson's population. This racial disparity cannot be explained. They also found that Blacks were more likely than whites to be subjected to repeat police/civilian encounters and to be frisked or searched.
